The Think Deck

Change how a room thinks.

Every group develops habits. Some help people inquire, disagree, notice evidence and change their minds. Others make familiar conclusions increasingly difficult to question.

The Think Deck

What it does

A room's thinking, made visible.

Rather than examining the strategy itself, the Think Deck helps a group notice and change the habits, practices and patterns shaping how it thinks.

It helps teams make those patterns visible and deliberately develop better ways of thinking together: how they inquire, how they handle evidence, how they disagree, and what they do when the easy conclusion arrives too soon.

Six kinds of card

Foundations, Habits, Practices, Patterns, Tensions, Prompts.

Its cards run from small interventions that change a single conversation to practices that can become part of organisational culture.

Foundations

The conditions beneath

The conditions beneath collective thinking.

Habits

What a room repeats

Six ways of changing what a room repeatedly does.

Practices

Small moves

Small, usable interventions that turn those habits into behaviour.

Patterns

How it distorts

Familiar ways collective thinking becomes distorted or constrained.

Tensions

Held, not resolved

Competing demands that need to be held rather than prematurely resolved.

Prompts

When it gets stuck

Questions that move a conversation when it becomes stuck.

When to reach for it

You might reach for it when…

Everyone appears to agree rather quickly.

The same conversation keeps returning.

The data feels reassuring but something doesn't fit.

A difficult issue is being reduced to an initiative.

One voice or perspective is dominating the evidence.

The group needs to disagree without becoming divided.

The card doesn't tell the room what to conclude. It changes what the room is able to notice.

Make better thinking a habit, not a hope.

The Think Deck is used within Synnovate workshops and development programmes. A better conversation doesn't become culture because it happened once, but shared practices, repeated, become shared habits.
